Herniated Discs-Back and Neck Pain

Patrick Massey MD, PhD, Daryl Massey PT, MPT
ALT-MED Medical and Physical Therapy
Elk Grove Village Il and serving the Chicago area

Most herniated discs have little or nothing to do with simple back pain (pain not radiating below the knee). They are often incidental findings on MRI. Most back and neck surgeries in the US are probably unnecessary.

Over the past two decades, research from Europe has shown that the natural history for most herniated discs is compete resolution and that conservative therapies, over time, often result in cure.

However, there are specific symptoms and conditions that make surgery an absolutely necessity but, in most cases, surgery for a herniated disc should not be done until other conservative therapies have been exhausted. Many can find complete and lasting pain relief and still have a herniated disc.

Benefit from back and neck pain may be found with ALT-MED physical therapy (click here), massage (click here), acupuncture (click here) and select vitamins and dietary supplements.

Dr. Massey published research on the effectiveness of the ALT-MED therapy approach for pain associated with herniated discs (click here and here).

ALT-MED was the program I'd been looking for to address my back pain. While chiropractic helped to..it didn't seem oriented to really changing my condition. After the ALT-MED program...I've resumed or taken up walking exercises that would have previously resulted in my leg and foot going numb... Great idea! Thanks!
