Acne vulgaris (cystic acne) is common and characterized by red, scaly skin, nodules, pimples and blackheads. Acne is most common during adolescence but can continue into adulthood.
Hormones such as testosterone and estrogen can have a profound effect on acne.
Hormone –related medical conditions like Cushing's syndrome and polycystic ovaries can make acne worse.
There is also a genetic component.
Stress can make acne worse…but then stress also affects a number of different hormones. Teenagers today are under increased stress.
Diet definitely affects the severity of acne…especially milk and a diet that is high in sugar and starch.
Some dietary supplements and herbs can be effective in treating acne. Stress reducing therapies can also help. Dietary changes may have the greatest effect in the short term and long term.
